Planning a Needs Assessment
Researchers have known for quite some time that caregiving can have detrimental mental
health effects on caregivers, but it has come to the forefront that research shows that it can also
cause serious physical health concerns (Family Caregiving Alliance, 2016). Caregivers who care
for aging family members often experience many stress related conditions. Conditions may
include but is not limited to familial support, financial constraints, and community resources and
support. Caregivers frequently find themselves physically and mentally exhausted. Most
caregivers report feelings of being overwhelmed and overworked yet ignore signs and symptoms
of anxiety and stress. With that being stated, there is a need for caregivers to educate themselves
about appropriate self-care needs and the resources available to them for assistance with their
family member. Caregivers place an immense amount of pressure on themselves citing being the
primary care provider, unrealistic expectations of others, and cultural beliefs thereby becoming
accustomed to repetitive tiresome work cycles. Caregivers will have optimal outcomes if they
garner support from family, friends, and community agencies. Additionally, if caregivers learn to
set realistic expectations for others about the demands of their job and take care of themselves
their overall health should improve.
In an effort to gain information about the stressors of caregivers, it will necessary to
administer surveys and/or questionnaires. According to Fox and Hunn (2007), questionnaires are
beneficial to the respondents the data can be collected relatively quickly, economically, and
easier to analyze.
Questionnaires serve to record the performance of a specified group and
collect feedback. Caregivers are mostly found at nursing homes and/or medical facilities, so
these are the first places to look when finding caring to question. They would be provided a
Linkert scale type questionnaire with pre-coded responses in regard to self-care, knowledge of
available resources, and support/resource, and health and wellness. Survey results should show
if participants benefit from resources being provided in any of the aforementioned areas.
For the purposes of this paper, support group programs bring together caregivers who
take care of family members and share similar experiences. An effective support program will
categorize emotional and social needs of these caregivers. The success of the program will rely
on how caregivers use and benefit from support gathered from family and friends, and
community resources. Participants will have 6-8 weeks of training where they will obtain and
gather new skills for about self-care and relationship building. After their needs have been
documented, pertinent resources will be identified. Subsequently, a social worker will provide
the caregiver with weekly psychoeducation sessions to address identified needs. Moreover, the
social worker will offer with resources such as community support and local agencies willing to
provide services to the caregiver. Services will include resources that relieves the burden on
caregiver and offers in-home assistance. For example, many caregivers are choosing to have
their meals prepared and delivered because of the efficiency and affordability. In-home
assistance will help alleviate the daily task list for caregivers. Time slots and space for the
caregivers to meet with the social workers will need to be secured. All social workers will have
been trained to provide best practices in research speaks directly to caregiver interventions.
Social workers will conduct a needs assessment of each client’s individual needs and situation. It
will be imperative to ensure that social workers are given an ample amount of time to research
and process the clients’ information so they can offer the best advice possible. After attending
the program all participants will be asked to complete a client satisfaction survey evaluation
form. This survey will provide insight into the caregivers’ satisfaction with the program and
identify improvement areas.
In conclusion, a follow-up needs assessment would need to be conducted to determine
and evaluate the costs associated with program and its effectiveness. As a program evaluator, my
concerns would depend heavily on certain prerequisites having been considered; such as are best
practices being incorporated in program interventions and if clients observe noticeable changes
due to services provided. Client participation will impact the result of the program greatly, so
attendance logs should be reviewed at the conclusion of the program.
